Black and White Film Photography

As we move through life, especially in a world that’s perpetually buzzing with digital noise, it’s easy to get swept up in the constant chase for instant results. Whether we’re snapping countless photos on our smartphones or rushing through our day-to-day, the world around us often becomes a blur. But for me, the past year has been all about the opposite. I decided to slow down, pick up my old Canon AE-1 Program and my Bronica ETRSi, and immerse myself in the art of traditional black and white film photography.

That decision resulted in my first book, In My Own Light: 2024 – A Black and White Film Journey, now available on Amazon. It’s a deeply personal collection of moments captured throughout the South of England (and a bit beyond), reflecting my return to analog photography. Each image is a testament to the power of slowing down, being present, and rediscovering the art of truly seeing the world.

A Personal Journey Through the Lens

Photography has always been a part of me, but like many, I found myself pulled into the convenience of digital technology. The beauty of being able to take a hundred shots and instantly review them felt freeing at first. But somewhere along the way, I realised that the art and intention behind each photograph had gotten lost. That’s when I knew I had to make a change.

In My Own Light: 2024 is my way of reconnecting with the tangible process of shooting on film, where every shot matters. There’s something incredibly mindful about choosing a film stock, loading it into the camera, and then waiting for the right moment. And then, of course, there’s the anticipation that comes after clicking the shutter—waiting to see how the film has captured that particular instant. Black and white film photography, It’s an experience that’s both nostalgic and grounding.

Embracing Imperfection

One of the most valuable lessons this journey has taught me is that perfection isn’t the goal. With film, you can’t see the results immediately, and that unpredictability forces you to let go. Not every image comes out how you expect, and that’s okay. In fact, it’s often those little imperfections—the unexpected shadows, the grain, the contrast between light and dark—that make a photograph truly unique. It’s those imperfections that have taught me to see beauty in the smallest of details.

Stepping Back to Move Forward: The Story Behind ‘In My Own Light: 2024’

Every image in this book carries that raw, unpolished quality of film photography, where the texture, depth, and mood are brought to life in ways that digital often can’t replicate. For me, it’s about creating something that feels real and honest, something that reflects both the quiet landscapes I’ve photographed and my own internal journey over the past year.

More Than Photography—It’s a Mindful Practice

Ultimately, In My Own Light: 2024 is more than just a collection of photographs. It’s a reflection of how slowing down and being fully present in the moment has improved my mental health and helped me reconnect with my creative spirit. In a time where life often feels fast and overwhelming, taking the time to pause, observe, and appreciate the world around us can make all the difference.
