Kennet and Avon Canal – A Photographic Study of an English Waterway

The Kennet and Avon Canal carries a quieter rhythm of England.

Narrowboats glide gently through working locks, reflections shimmer across still water, and towpaths stretch beneath changing skies that shift with the seasons. It is a landscape shaped by movement and stillness — industry and nature existing side by side.

This ongoing photographic project explores the character of the canal through careful observation of light, texture and atmosphere. Rather than capturing quick snapshots, the focus is on returning to the same stretches of water, watching how mood transforms familiar scenes over time.

A Slow Exploration of Place

The canal is more than infrastructure — it is a living environment.

Weathered lock gates hold the marks of decades of use. Brick bridges frame narrow slices of sky. Boats pass slowly, creating gentle disturbances in otherwise still water. In colder months, mist rises from the surface. In summer, long shadows stretch across the towpath.

Each image in this collection reflects that quiet detail.

Most of the work is rooted around Berkshire stretches of the canal, including areas near Aldermaston Wharf, but the project continues to expand along the wider waterway. Over time, it will grow into a deeper visual record of the canal’s changing character across different locations and seasons.
